1. Ultra-Fast Charging
GEN1200 aims to redefine the charging experience for electric vehicles by enabling 1200V systems that support ultra-fast charging. This technology will allow EV batteries to charge from 20% to 80% in under 10 minutes, addressing one of the most significant barriers to EV adoption—charging time. This rapid charging capability will make EVs more practical for long-distance travel and eliminate the need for extended stops at charging stations. The project achieves this by using advanced battery technologies, innovative power electronics, and optimized thermal management systems.
2. Higher Efficiency
Energy efficiency is at the core of GEN1200’s ambitions. The project seeks to achieve peak efficiency levels exceeding 99% in power electronics and an average efficiency above 97% during real-world driving conditions. This improvement is crucial for reducing energy losses, extending driving range, and lowering operational costs. By leveraging advanced wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), along with smart control algorithms, GEN1200 ensures that power is used optimally, even during partial load conditions.
3. Integrated Solutions
GEN1200 promotes integration by combining multiple functionalities into single units. For example, the traction inverter will also function as a DC-DC converter and an onboard AC charger, eliminating the need for separate components. Furthermore, these components will be integrated with the electric motor and transmission into a 3-in-1 electric axle. This approach reduces the weight, size, and complexity of the powertrain, leading to significant cost savings and enhanced reliability. Integration also improves the system’s thermal and mechanical performance, making the overall EV design more compact and efficient.
4. Backwards Compatibility
To ensure seamless adoption of new technologies, GEN1200 focuses on backwards compatibility. The system will be compatible with existing 400V and 800V charging infrastructures while being ready for the future 1200V charging network. This is achieved by incorporating innovative power electronics, such as interleaved boost converters, that enable charging at various voltages without requiring major changes to the existing infrastructure. This feature ensures that users can transition to the next generation of EVs without being limited by the availability of new charging stations.
5. Cost Reduction
A significant ambition of GEN1200 is to reduce the cost of EV powertrains by more than 40% compared to current state-of-the-art systems. This is achieved through multi-functional components that perform several tasks, reducing the number of parts needed. Additionally, innovative manufacturing techniques and optimized designs lower production costs while maintaining high performance and reliability. These cost savings make EVs more affordable, encouraging broader adoption and supporting the global shift to sustainable transportation.
6. Digital and Smart Control
The project leverages advanced digital twin models and adaptive control algorithms to enhance system performance and reliability. Digital twins are virtual replicas of physical components that allow real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance optimization. By using these models, GEN1200 can predict and address issues before they occur, reducing downtime and extending the lifespan of components. Smart control systems also optimize energy use, adapt to different driving conditions, and improve the overall efficiency and safety of the powertrain.
7. Sustainability
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the GEN1200 project. The team prioritizes eco-design by minimizing the environmental impact of EV components throughout their lifecycle. This includes reducing the use of critical raw materials, improving recyclability, and lowering energy consumption during manufacturing and operation. Comprehensive lifecycle assessments ensure that the technologies developed align with circular economy principles. By focusing on resource efficiency and environmental responsibility, GEN1200 contributes to a greener and more sustainable future for electric mobility.
